Meltwater Acquires Social Analytics Firm Sysomos

Media-monitoring firm Meltwater has added another  startup to its string of recent acquisitions in the social media analytics and AI space.

Originally founded in Norway but now headquartered in San Francisco, Meltwater has announced the acquisition of Sysomos— one of the globe’s leaders in social analytics and engagement—for an as yet undisclosed amount.

Based in Canada, Sysomos has developed tools allowing companies to analyse social media, online news, and human-generated content on a unified platform. As of the time of acquisition, it had raised a Seed round.

“By joining the Meltwater team, our clients benefit from the leadership and global scale of one of the world’s first SaaS companies,” former Sysomos CEO Peter Heffring said in statement. “In order to enhance the search and analytics experience in the Sysomos Platform, we will leverage the AI models and information extracted from the unstructured web by Meltwater. This will give our clients the context needed to collect more meaningful insights across their earned and owned social channels.”

Sysomos will keep running as a standalone firm, but under the umbrella of  Meltwater’s Social Analytics division—which Heffring will start leading.

“All the social analytics companies look at social data in isolation, limiting the insights for brands and businesses,” Meltwater founder and CEO Jörn Lyseggen said, commenting the deal.

“With our acquisition of Sysomos, we can bring together news and social media under one company, giving social data context while adding social engagement to our news and media monitoring offering.”
