London-based AR startup Zappar Secures £3M Series A Round

Augmented Reality startup Zappar has raised £3 million ($3.75 million)  in a Series A round led by London-based investment fund Hargreave Hale. Brandtech group You & Mr Jones, and Chinese game publisher iDreamSky also took part in the round.

London-based Zappar is expected to invest the fresh funds into developing new products and expanding business abroad.

More specifically, the company is looking to increase support for its newly-launched  flagship creation ZapWorks —a toolkit to produce AR and VR interactive content— besides enhancing its global marketing operations, with the iDreamSky connection potentially opening the door to accessing the Chinese market.

It is also reported that the company—founded in 2011 by Simon Taylor, Connell Gauld, and Caspar Thykier— will create new positions within the company.

“This funding round is another great milestone for the business,”  Zappar CEO Thykier said in a statement. “Zappar’s mission is to democratize augmented reality. AR represents an exciting future for consumer engagement, connecting devices to the world around us. With this round, our established institutional and trade investors lend further credence to this future as we continue toward AR delivering a digital discovery channel through mobile devices and head-mounted displays.”

Hargreave Hale’s fund manager Oliver Bedford also commented the deal: “We’re at a unique moment in time as AR, VR, and MR content and technology moves into the mainstream,” he said. “There are a number of players entering this space. Zappar are a clear front-runner, grounded in an established, effective, robust, and highly scalable content creation technology that caters to all markets and developer needs.”
