London-based Drone Startup Sky-Futures Secures £3.1M Investment

This UK-Japanese partnership is flying.

British drone technology company Sky-Futures has secured a £3.1 million investment from Japanese firm Mitsui & Co.

The investment is part of a wider deal, according to which Sky-Futures will now provide Mitsui & Co with drone inspection capabilities in sectors such as energy, marine and infrastructure.

Founded in 2009, Sky-Futures is based in London, and also has an office in Texas. It has been working with British emergency workers—such as police and fight fighters— to help them deploy drones during rescue operations and disaster response missions. The company also provides industrial inspection services.

The partnership with  Mitsui & Co was clinched during British Prime Minister Theresa May’s official visit to Japan— a trip which is part of the UK government’s efforts to secure new trade deals for post-Brexit Britain.

“This partnership with Mitsui brings industrial drone inspection into the mainstream. Demand for drone survey software is rocketing as a result of the shift to AI and machine learning that is fundamentally changing the way inspection is done,” Sky-Futures CEO James Harrison said in a statement.

“Our technology enables tracking and monitoring of highly complex infrastructure over its lifetime, automatically detecting defects and saving precious engineering time. We’re excited to be working with Mitsui to expand our global reach.”
