Apple’s latest purchase is a Finnish company specialised in mapping indoor spaces.

According to Bloomberg, the Cupertino-based tech titan has acquired Indoor.io, in a bid to enhance its mapping app’s accuracy and challenge Google’s increasing dominance in the sector. The value of the deal is still unknown.

Indoor.io’s technology, if incorporated in Apple’s devices, would make it easier for users to navigate large indoor venues, such as stadiums, museums and airport terminals.

Navigation would be achieved through a combination of pressure sensors, GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.

This is Apple’s second acquisition in the field of Indoor navigation — the previous one being WiFi Slam’s 2013 purchase.

The company is also rumoured to be turning to drones to update outdoor mapping data in a quicker way that it is allowed by its current team of camera-wielding vans.
