Sadiq Khan backs London tech start-ups to tackle city’s challenges

Eight tech start-ups have been awarded £15,000 each to work on new technologies to tackle some of London’s most pressing social and environmental issues as part of the Civic Innovation Challenge, the London Gov website announced on Tuesday.

The sum has been awarded by the Greater London Authority (GLA) to the start-ups to help to solve problems like dementia and loneliness among London’s elderly citizens, pollution in the City, housing crisis and financial inequality.

The Civic Innovation Challenge was launched in June as part of the Mayor’s wider initiative Smarter London Together, and is supported by companies such as Transport for London, Shell and Lloyds Banking Group.

“This competition has been a blueprint for getting these big institutions to collaborate with start-ups and tackle some of London’s major challenges”, said Jessica Stacey, a Partner at Bethnal Green Ventures.

The eight winners and the partners sponsoring them are:

  • Dementia: Pearl Support Network (partner: Our Healthier South East London STP)
  • Active Travel: Go Jauntly (partner: TfL)
  • Electric Vehicles: Connected Kerb (partners: National Grid and Shell)
  • Affordable Housing: VU.CITY  and Crossmap (partner: TfL)
  • Financial Inclusion: Quids In! (partner: Lloyds Banking Group)
  • Loneliness and Isolation: Buddyhub (partner: Hackney Council)
  • Physical Activity: Elemental – The Social Prescribing People (partner: Ealing Council)

“Many of London’s advances in the application of data and smart technologies are recognised around the world and I want London to become a global test-bed for civic innovation,” commented Mr Khan.

“The fact that our city’s tech community is home to some of the most creative businesses anywhere in the world is something of which we can be really proud. We want London to be the world’s smartest city and these dynamic companies have a crucial role to play.”
