Science Discovery Platform Sparrho Raises $3 Million from White Cloud Capital

SHACK15 resident Sparrho, a platform leveraging Artificial Intelligence to help researchers discover relevant science publications, has raised $3  million (£2.3m) in a pre-Series A round led by White Cloud Capital.

It is understood that the fresh round of cash will be used to fuel further product development.

The London-based company, founded in 2013 by EF alum Vivian Chan and Niluka Satharasinghe, combines machine learning and human brainpower to allow users to cut through the thicket of science papers, conference proceedings, and patents, and stay on top of the scientific information they are most interested in.

The platform, structured like a search engine, scours through more than 45,000 publications and has so far listed and referenced more than 60 million papers; it claims to have one million users in 150 countries.

In a statement, Sparrho CEO and cofounder Chan said: “The appetite for direct access to scientific thinking has never been greater. Some of Sparrho’s most dedicated users are members of the public and their interest in science is often driven by their profession, personal interests or medical conditions.”

“Enterprise is simultaneously looking for new ways to showcase its own science thinking and stay on top of its research landscape. Meanwhile, members of the scientific community commonly report feeling “siloed” in their area of research, and wish to communicate their work in new and dynamic ways,” she added.

White Cloud Capital’s ‎head of venture Isabel Fox also commented on the investment:  “The company not only disrupts scientific publishing but is also creating an entirely new economy of scientific expertise – accessible to the public and to enterprise. We’re delighted to lead this round and support Sparrho as it scales,” she said.
